Utah Kokanee Spawn 2026: Where to Watch, Dates & Conservation Rules

Key 2026 dates

  • September into early October: DWR says this is the prime statewide period to see kokanee in spawning colors.
  • September 10–November 30: Statewide kokanee harvest is closed while the fish spawn. Some tributaries may have earlier or additional closures, so verify the current Utah Fishing Guidebook before fishing.
  • September 19, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.: DWR kokanee viewing event at Strawberry Reservoir.
  • September 26, 3–7 p.m.: DWR kokanee viewing event at Fish Lake.

Places DWR highlights

DWR's 2026 guide highlights Strawberry Reservoir, Fish Lake, the Jordanelle/Provo River area, Causey Reservoir, Smith and Morehouse Reservoir, Stateline Reservoir, Electric Lake and Sheep Creek among the places where kokanee spawning activity can be observed. Visibility varies with timing, water conditions and fish movement, so treat the list as a planning starting point rather than a guarantee.

Conservation etiquette matters

Spawning kokanee have one job left in their life cycle. DWR asks viewers not to pick fish up, let dogs chase them, or wade through active spawning gravel. Most Utah kokanee populations rely heavily on natural reproduction, so protecting redds and minimizing disturbance matters.

  1. Watch from the bank or established viewing area when possible.
  2. Keep dogs controlled around shallow spawning water.
  3. Do not handle spawning fish for photos.
  4. Avoid stepping on cleaned gravel or areas where fish are actively digging.
  5. Pack out trash and give other viewers room.
